An accident involving a semi-truck and another vehicle on northbound Interstate 435 in Kansas City, Kansas, causes a major traffic jam Friday morning. The incident happened on I-435 near Wolcott Drive in KCK – south of the Missouri River. If you’re using I-435 to get to the airport or anywhere in northern Platte County, expect a delay. The Kansas State Highway Patrol says the incident happened around 6:54 a.m. Friday. Officials with the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department said a utility vehicle and a tractor-trailer truck were involved in the accident. The driver of the truck was thrown from the vehicle in the crash and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The driver of the semitrailer suffered minor injuries and refused emergency services on site. Kansas City Scout expects the freeway to be cleared no later than 10 a.m.

The accident caused a large amount of fire and smoke, causing both lanes of traffic to be closed while emergency vehicles worked to get to the scene of the accident. Northbound lanes reopened about two hours later, but southbound lanes were closed until well after 8 p.m.
On Tuesday night, the Kansas City Police Department said its investigation revealed a red dump truck was traveling northbound on the freeway when the left front tire blew out. It then turned off the road, went through the median and through the Jersey cables dividing the northbound and southbound lanes.
At that point, the dump truck struck the driver’s side of the gold-colored Ford F-150, which was heading south.
The dump truck also hit the front of a red southbound Toyota 4Runner and the driver’s side of the white Kansas City work truck.

Debris from the accident damaged a white Ford Transit van traveling south. This driver tried to stop to avoid the collision but was then stopped by a black Toyota traveling in the same direction.
According to the KCPD, this is the 46th traffic accident this year. There were 35 this time last year.
